Speech Oppressed
Depicted are Tibetan monks who have risked their lives to communicate to the world that Tibetans in Tibet are being brutally oppressed. The monks have covered their faces to protect their identities. The banner reads, “We have no freedom of speech!” This painting is an interpretation of an actual incident that took place at the Labrang Monastery in Amdo Province, Tibet. The monks featured disrupted a Chines government-controlled media tour that had been designed to cover up its brutal crackdown in Tibet following the 2008 uprising.
The hand gestures of the monk on the right symbolize the Tibetan people (monk’s left hand) as they are censored and controlled by the Chinese government (monk’s right hand).
